Waikiki Voluntourism: How to Take a Trip That Gives Back

Did you know that Hawai‘i is the only place in the United States where tropical rainforests and cloud forests exist? These unique places are unlike any other on Earth, and sadly, most of these forests have gone extinct. That's why we have partnered with the Hawaiian Legacy Reforestation Initiative (HLRI) to re-establish these critical habitats for many endemic Hawaiian species, some of which are endangered.

When you stay at Embassy Suites Waikiki, we invite you to "malama" (care for) Hawai‘i, connect deeply with the land and culture, and leave your legacy for future generations. Join us in our commitment to help reforest more than 1,700 acres of historic land on both O‘ahu and Hawai‘i Island. Here's how you can get involved while vacationing in Waikiki:

Sponsor a Tree
When you book the Malama Hawai‘i package, a portion of your stay will fund the planting of a new native tree. After your tree has been planted, HLRI will send you a digital certificate and RFID tag so you can track the status of your tree and watch it grow virtually! Also with this offer, as a thanks to you, your suite will be upgraded to the next available category and you'll enjoy a 1 p.m. late check-out, both based on availability.

Plant a Tree
If you are eager to get your hands dirty, book the Planter's Experience where you'll get to plant the tree yourself in a memorable ceremony at Gunstock Ranch's Legacy Forest on the picturesque North Shore of O‘ahu. On the eco-tour via horseback or utility terrain vehicle, you'll learn about the history of the Hawaiian land and how your tree will contribute to healing the local ecosystem. Plus, you'll encounter wildlife, grazing cattle and beautiful ocean views. When you leave, you'll have made a measurable difference in the effort to create a sustainable future. You can track your tree's growth virtually from home and are invited back to visit in-person anytime!
