As millions watched the events unfold, two of the planes slammed into the World Trade Center’s North and South Towers in New York City. The third plane hit the west side of the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. The fourth plane crashed in an empty field in western Pennsylvania following a struggle between passengers and hijackers.
